Tam Man Ching Michelle (b. Hong Kong) works across moving images, installations and interventional practices. She is stimulated by a contemporary primitivity to explore the attachment recalled in human amidst their ambivalence towards the world. Borrowing from research on materials, speculative ecology, anthropology, Michelle establishes her conversations with social constructs and the cosmos from a local perspective, concurrently searching for possibilities to negotiate in complexities.
Her current practice centers around species politics and otherness, speculating reverse ecological politics. With a focus on language and materiality of films, biomaterials and found objects, she creates phantasmagorical viewfinders that respond to the contingency to locate and navigate oneself amidst hegemony in evolutionary theories, neocolonialism, and geopolitics. The loosely connected elements open up slippages where interchangeabilities and entangled empathy could be evoked.
Michelle is completing her MFA in Fine Arts at Goldsmiths, University of London (2024), and holds a BA in Fine Arts from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (2020). She currently lives and works in London and Hong Kong. Her works have been shown in exhibitions and screenings including Pushkin House (London, UK), IKLECTIC (London, UK), Hypha Studios (London, UK), Para Site (Hong Kong), and Eaton HK (Hong Kong). Being accepted into the Art and Culture Outreach residency programme in 2020, she cofounded Ipseng, a Hong Kong artist collective.
